CANDLE CARE
Thanks for inviting allume. into your home!
Follow these steps to keep your candles burning bright, clean, and safe.
The Basics
-
Trim the wick to 1/4” before each light.
-
First burn: keep it lit 2–3 hours (or until the top melts edge-to-edge).
-
Each burn after: 2–4 hours max.
-
Let it cool completely before touching.
-
Keep it draft-free and on a heat-safe surface.
-
Never leave a lit candle unattended
-
Stop burning with 1/2” of wax left in the jar to avoid overheating.

DETAILED TIPS & TRICKS
Before You Light
Find a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, plants, or anything that could catch.
Check the wick, it should be centered and trimmed.
Remove any loose wick trimmings, matches, or dust from the wax surface.
The First Burn “Setting the Candle’s Memory”
Wax has a memory. If the first melt doesn’t reach the edges, the candle may tunnel in later burns.
Light your candle and let it burn long enough to create a full melt pool (the melted wax reaches the glass all around).
That should be about 2–3 hours. Keep an eye on it (always burn within sight!).
Your Burn Ritual
Trim the wick to 1/4” using a wick trimmer or a pair of scissors. Between burns, you can just pluck off the blackened tips of our self trimming cotton wicks. We recommend using a dry tissue for this part, to avoid messy fingers!
Light and enjoy, burn 2–4 hours max per session. Longer burns can overheat the jar or drown the wick.
Check the surroundings: avoid vents, fans, and open windows. Drafts = uneven melt + sooty glass.
Re-center the wick gently with a metal butter knife if it drifts while the wax is still warm and soft.
Let it cool completely before moving, touching, or relighting. The jar can stay hot for a while, be patient.
Extinguish Like a Pro
Best Use a snuffer to cap the flame.
Next best Dip the wick into the melt pool with a wick dipper, then lift it upright—this prevents smoke.
If you blow it out, do it gently and avoid splashing wax. Don’t use water (ever!)
Safety Musts Non‑Negotiables
- Burn within sight. Never leave a candle unattended, while you are sleeping, or near kids or pets.
- Keep away from anything flammables and at least 1’ from any other objects.
- Jar care: discontinue use when 1/2” of wax remains.
- Keep it to one candle per space (or keep them at least 4” apart) so they don’t overheat each other.
- Container gets hot: don’t move a lit candle or touch the jar of a recently burned out candle
- Do not burn more than 4 hours at a time.
- Only burn on level, heat-safe surfaces.
Storing Your Candle
Once cooled, place the lid on and keep in a cool & dry, out of direct sunlight.
Store upright to keep the wick centered.
Avoid extreme heat or freezing temps. (allume. candles are strictly for indoor use)
After the Last Burn
Let the jar cool, then place in the freezer for 1–2 hours. Once frozen, you can simply pop out any leftover wax, wipe the jar clean with warm soapy water, and reuse the jar for cotton swabs, hair clips, office supplies or even a tiny plant 🌱

Troubleshooting
Tunneling (ring of wax around the sides)
Let it burn longer next time until the melt reaches the edges.
Mushrooming (little “cap” on the wick)
Completely normal sometimes, especially with longer burns.Trim to 1/4” before the next light to prevent soot.
Sooty glass or a smoky flame
Wick is too long or the candle is in a draft.Trim, move away from drafts, and keep burns 2–4 hours.
Weak flame / Wick drowning
Extinguish, allow to cool slightly, then absorb a teaspoon of melted wax with a paper towel or spoon out a little.
Relight and keep sessions a bit shorter until the flame strengthens.
Uneven melt pool
Rotate the candle 180° between burns and keep it out of drafts.
Ensure the first burn reaches the edges. And always keep out of direct sunlight for a smoother look.
